Public rapid electric vehicle charging costs rise 42% in four months https://whatelectric.co.uk/2022/09/27/public-rapid-electric-vehicle-charging-costs-rise-42-in-four-months/ https://whatelectric.co.uk/2022/09/27/public-rapid-electric-vehicle-charging-costs-rise-42-in-four-months/#respond Tue, 27 Sep 2022 21:18:41 +0000 https://whatelectric.co.uk/?p=314 The cost to charge an electric car on a pay-as-you-go basis at a publicly accessible ‘rapid’ charger has increased by 42% – or 18.75p per kilowatt hour – since May to reach an average of 63.29p per kilowatt hour, new data from RAC Charge Watch indicates*.

The increase – caused by the soaring costs of wholesale gas and electricity** – means that it now costs drivers on average £32.41 to rapid charge a typical family-sized electric car with a 64kWh battery to 80%***, which is up nearly £10 (£9.60) since May and £13.59 compared to a year ago.

Drivers using the fastest, so-called ‘ultra-rapid’ chargers that have a power output of more than 100kW have seen average charging costs increase by a quarter (25%), or 12.97p, since May with the current average price of charging sitting a little over the ‘rapid’ cost at 63.94p per kilowatt hour. This puts the cost of an 80% charge at £32.74, up from £26.10 in May (25% increase) and from £17.51 in September 2021 (87% increase).

The RAC’s figures show that a driver exclusively using a rapid or ultra-rapid charger on the public network will now pay around 18p per mile for electricity, up from an average of 13p per litre in May. This compares to 19p per mile for a petrol car and 21p per mile for a diesel one, based on someone driving at an average of 40 miles to the gallon****.

In reality, many current electric car drivers will predominantly charge at home where electricity is cheaper – under the Energy Price Guarantee that takes effect next weekend, the cost per mile for an average-sized EV driven reasonably efficiently is around 9p and the cost to charge a car to 80% at home will be £17.87. But the huge price gap between home and public charging highlights the extent to which drivers who depend on the charging network, including those who don’t have driveways and can’t charge at home, pay a premium to run electric cars.

The RAC is also concerned the relatively high cost of rapid charging on the public network risks putting off drivers from opting for electric cars when they next change their vehicles. While the Government’s Energy Bill Relief Scheme announced last week should help prevent charging costs from spiralling still further, it remains the case that drivers using public chargers unfairly pay 20% in VAT for electricity they buy, compared to charging at home where it’s just 5%. The RAC therefore backs the FairCharge campaign’s call for both rates to be set at 5%, a move that would reduce the cost of an 80% rapid charge by 7.91p to 55.38p per kWh, and an ultra-rapid charge by 7.99p to 55.95p per kWh and would not unfairly penalise those drivers who can’t charge their cars at home.

RAC EV spokesperson Simon Williams said:

“For those that have already made the switch to an electric car or are thinking of doing so, it remains the case that charging away from home costs less than refuelling a petrol or diesel car, but these figures show that the gap is narrowing as a result of the enormous increases in the cost of electricity. These figures very clearly show that it’s drivers who use public rapid and ultra-rapid chargers the most who are being hit the hardest.

“The Energy Price Guarantee benefits those drivers who are fortunate enough to charge their cars at home, but for those that rely on the public charging network – including those without driveways – it’s a much bleaker picture right now.

“The fact wholesale energy will prices be capped for six months should lead to some price reductions by charge point operators in the coming weeks – but what EV drivers don’t want to see is operators having to hike their charges next Spring if wholesale costs keep climbing.

“The Government is largely relying on the private sector to do the heavy lifting when it comes to getting the country’s electric car charging infrastructure up to the scale and standard it needs to be to allow for mass adoption of electric vehicles. The problem is that these companies face such enormous cost increases that their investments in new charging sites, and upgrades of old ones, are in jeopardy unless costs can be kept down.

“Last week, charge point operators got behind the RAC-backed FairCharge campaign in calling for the Government to end the inequity that exists between drivers who can charge at home and those that cannot, by cutting the 20% VAT charged on electricity at public chargers to match the 5% domestic rate. The Government needs to redouble its efforts in helping drivers to go electric if it is to meet its own net-zero transport objectives and levelling the public and domestic electricity VAT rates would show it is serious about doing so at a time when household budgets are getting ever tighter.”

Fiat line-up now fully-electrified with the arrival of 500X Hybrid and Tipo Hybrid https://whatelectric.co.uk/2022/09/15/fiat-line-up-now-fully-electrified-with-the-arrival-of-500x-hybrid-and-tipo-hybrid/ https://whatelectric.co.uk/2022/09/15/fiat-line-up-now-fully-electrified-with-the-arrival-of-500x-hybrid-and-tipo-hybrid/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 13:23:11 +0000 https://whatelectric.co.uk/?p=42 Fiat announced the arrival of the new 500X Hybrid and Tipo Hybrid, completing the electrification of its line-up. The brand’s electrification journey began with the 500 Hybrid and Panda Hybrid, and continued with the fully-electric New 500. Now comes the launch of the new 500X and Tipo, with a new 48-Volt Hybrid engine. Fiat now offers at least one low-emissions version for each model and takes a further step along the path of energy transition and sustainable mobility.

In the words of Olivier Francois, Fiat CEO and Stellantis CMO: “The FIAT journey toward electrification continues. With the launch of the new 500X Hybrid and Tipo Hybrid, equipped with new 48-Volt Hybrid technology, the FIAT range is now fully electrified. We can now provide all our customers with a sustainable mobility solution, whatever their mobility needs, with simple technology and at an affordable cost. I am extremely proud of this for its consistency with our vision: ‘It’s only green when it’s green for all.’ And there’s more. Our journey toward sustainable mobility for all continues, with the aim – as I have previously announced – to launch a new vehicle every year, starting as soon as in 2023. Each model will have an electric motor, to achieve a fully electric line-up from 2027”.

With the new 500X Hybrid and Tipo Hybrid, Fiat has provided a user-friendly technological solution, incorporating smart innovation into an accessible package. They are both another major step in the brand’s journey to meet rising demand for this technology in their segment (+30% in the last year). The partnership with (RED) also continues as 500X Hybrid and Tipo Hybrid are launched in the (RED) Special Series trim level.

All versions of the 500X and Tipo equipped with the hybrid engine also include the logo identifying them as a ‘Hybrid’ on the tailgate, made up of two leaves with dew drops in blue – a more vibrant shade than used on the 500 and Panda, to denote the technological evolution of the engine.

New 48-Volt Hybrid

The new engine fitted to the 500X Hybrid and Tipo Hybrid is not only more affordable thanks to its low running costs but is also more technologically advanced. However, in the name of Fiat’s ‘Tech It Easy’ slogan, this innovation requires no complicated instruction booklets to be used to its full potential. ‘We Plug, You Play’ – the claim launched by the Fiat brand at Stellantis Software Day – now finds a practical application in an engine made to be there for customers in their everyday lives, meeting their mobility needs without unnecessary complications.

The secret of the performance of the 500X Hybrid and Tipo Hybrid lies in the synergy between the new-generation FireFly engine, a 4-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol turbo that can deliver up to 130hp with torque of 240Nm, and the 48-Volt, 15kW e-motor, controlled by the new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Courtesy of advanced hybrid technology, the power of the FireFly is supported by a BSG electric motor with silent, 100 per cent electric startup, and by the e-motor that improves the vehicle’s efficiency and dynamics. The car can therefore travel with the internal combustion engine turned off.

Consumption & Emissions*

This is the first Fiat Hybrid that uses the electric motor by completely disconnecting the petrol engine, which can remain idle for up to 47 per cent of the time according to the total WLTP cycle. In the urban cycle alone, the percentage rises to 62 per cent. The benefits of the new 48-volt 1.5 T4 Hybrid engine are even greater than the previous 1.3 T4 (500X): in the new version, the CO2 emissions – are up to 11 per cent lower (WLTP cycle). Performance is never sacrificed, and the car is very comfortable to drive, courtesy of the practically imperceptible shifts between the electric motor and the combustion engine.

Performance

With acceleration to 62mph in 9.3 seconds (Tipo) and 9.4 seconds (500X) there is practically instantaneous torque delivery from the e-motor. The performance of the combustion engine is therefore quickly supported when restarting and performance is optimised, mitigating the turbo lag effect and ensuring ready responsiveness to pressure on the accelerator pedal. Similarly, if starting up in pure electric mode, the combustion engine is ignited to assist in the demand for power.

Last but not least, the e-motor acts to shift the operating point of the combustion engine, ensuring that it can reach maximum efficiency even in a cold vehicle. This function speeds up the catalyser warmup transition, with further benefits in terms of fuel consumption and emissions.

Driving electric

The hybrid power supply has multiple advantages in both new models, not least in startup in 100 per cent electric mode: smooth, silent and no fuel wasted. Likewise, the car can continue to be driven in full-electric mode, compatible with power demand and the battery charge level (e-launch). Electric-only power supply can also be used for the e-creeping function, to make a series of short movements forward with no pressure on the accelerator, for example in a traffic jam (e-queueing). The car can also be parked in 100 per cent electric mode, either in first gear or in reverse (e-parking). In addition, the hybrid power supply is designed to recover energy during both braking and deceleration.

The advantages of this technology are immediate: lower emissions, less noise pollution, more comfort and fun – courtesy of the fluidity of the automatic transmission and the responsiveness of the power supply, and lower fuel consumption.

Fiat 500X Hybrid, the Italian crossover

The 500X Hybrid is the ideal addition to the line-up of a model that, since its launch in 2014, has recently exceeded 750,000 registrations: a global success, given that the 500X is sold in all major markets around the world.

Available as a soft top and offers the option of a (RED) edition, the Hybrid version of the 500X now introduces the new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The exterior look has also been refreshed with the launch of the Model Year 2022: the front takes on the new ‘500’ logo, while the rear includes dynamic ‘FIAT’ lettering. Two design cues that make the 500X even more contemporary and a nod to the look and feel of the New 500.

Available in Club, Cross and Sport trim levels and two body variants (Hatchback and Dolcevita with soft top), the 500X line-up also includes the 1.0 120hp manual transmission unit. Together with the new Hybrid version, it makes up an offer that can meet customers’ every need for mobility.

Fiat Tipo Hybrid

Tipo Hybrid fits into the line-up of a model that has sold over one million units since launch, making it the epitome of the ‘family mover’. It is available in three trim levels (Tipo, City Life, and Cross), all in the hatchback body variant. As well as the Hybrid version, Tipo is also available with a 100hp 1.0 T3 petrol engine. In addition to the Tipo Cross 1.0 100hp specification, the Tipo Cross Hybrid receives as standard heated front seats, keyless entry and go, and blind spot assist.

LIVING WITH THE ALL-NEW KIA NIRO EV IS AN EFFORTLESS EXPERIENCE https://whatelectric.co.uk/2022/09/13/living-with-the-all-new-kia-niro-ev-is-an-effortless-experience/ https://whatelectric.co.uk/2022/09/13/living-with-the-all-new-kia-niro-ev-is-an-effortless-experience/#respond Tue, 13 Sep 2022 16:29:41 +0000 https://whatelectric.co.uk/?p=38 The all-new Kia Niro EV has been designed to make the transition to all-electric next-generation mobility simple, seamless and intuitive for customers wanting to embrace an efficient, economical and zero-emissions driving experience.

From its highly-efficient electric powertrain that can deliver an impressive driving range of up to 460km on the WLTP cycle, through to its relaxing and intuitive driving experience, high-tech but functional interior, bold design and low cost of ownership, every facet of the Niro EV has been honed to make e-mobility a logical and straightforward choice for customers.

At the heart of this easy-to-use ethos underpinning the development of the Niro EV are a series of clever solutions that have been designed to enhance usability, ensuring Kia’s latest eco-friendly CUV remains one of the most effortless vehicles to live with.

Space to get truly comfortable

On entering the all-new Niro EV, occupants are greeted by a spacious and welcoming interior, enabled by being based on a new and enlarged platform compared to the first-generation Niro. At 4,420mm long, 1,825mm wide, 1,570mm in height, and with a 2,720mm wheelbase, Kia’s engineers and designers have been able to deliver a car with outstanding occupant space and storage.

Front seat passengers can use this space to stretch out, with two highly ergonomic heated and ventilated seats ensuring optimum comfort. A memory function provides additional convenience by enabling different drivers to set and select their preferred seating positions at the touch of a button. While this tech ensures those piloting the all-new Niro EV are all set for the journey ahead, an innovative passenger relaxion seat means the front seat passenger can also get fully comfortable when the vehicle is stationary. On command, the seat will lift and recline to maximise comfort and provide optimal postural support while charging or resting.

Each front seat features an innovative slimline design with a frame that’s been reduced by 30mm for an almost 30% thinner form. Combined with a two-step heated rear bench seat that can slide backwards and forwards, the all-new Niro EV delivers outstanding rear passenger space and comfort, with 967mm of headroom and 938mm of legroom.

Impressive luggage capacity

Whether on a family adventure or undertaking a shopping trip, the all-new Niro EV can store a sizeable amount of luggage thanks to its class-leading trunk capacity. Featuring 475-litres of stowage space, users can extend this by conveniently flipping the 60/40 rear seats for a voluminous 1,392-litres of additional storage potential. Furthering the practical and flexible nature of the trunk is a clever foldable cargo screen that can double as a sunshield. Made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET), users can fold and store the screen in a handy pouch when not in use.

The all-new Niro EV also benefits from a useful 20-litre frunk. Located under the bonnet, the frunk can be used to store the vehicle’s charging cable, while its location is ideally situated close to the vehicle’s charging port. The Niro EV’s charging port is positioned in the centre of the front grille of the vehicle for easy access at charging points. The frunk can also store the Niro EV’s Vehicle-to-Device (V2D) adapter, a feature that enables users to power external electrical appliances directly from the vehicle’s battery.

Another intelligent storage solution is an adaptable centre console box that provides front-seat occupants with multiple storage solutions. Occupants can use the feature to access handy cupholders, while a detachable middle tray partition allows more space to store items such as a laptop, tablet or documents. Located above this is an integrated infotainment and climate control system that ensures front seat occupants can access these controls without the need to scroll through multiple menus.

While many EVs offer limited towing capabilities, the all-new Niro EV delivers braked and unbraked towing capacities of 750kg and 300kg respectively, ideal for trips away.

IONIQ 6’s interior is particularly developed to serve as a comfy and personalized hideaway. The
Dual Color Ambient Lighting allows a driver to customize the look and feel of the interior cabin by
selecting from a spectrum of 64 colours * and six pre-selected themes 2 . The Speed Sync Lighting
mode adds emotion to the driving experience by changing the brightness of the interior lighting in
the first row based on the vehicle’s speed.
The optional Relaxation Comfort Seats 3 in the first row promote leisure by simply adjusting the seat
angle. In addition, all of its seats are specifically-manufactured for all-electric models, and they
are approximately 30 percent thinner than those in other conventional models, providing more

vehicle’s driving status.
“IONIQ 6 connects an emotional convergence of functionality with aesthetics,” said SangYup Lee,
Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center. “The distinctive streamlined design
is the result of close cooperation between engineers and designers, with obsessive attention to
detail and customer-centric values at the core. We have created the IONIQ 6 as a mindful cocoon

800-V charging as standard; it can accommodate 400-V charging without the need for additional
components or adapters.
IONIQ 6, like IONIQ 5 before it, provides an innovative vehicle-to-load (V2L) function that allows
customers to charge any electric devices — ideal for powering necessities during a power
outage, camping or outdoor projects. V2L is enabled using an available accessory adaptor and
goes into the outside charging port. In addition to the outside power outlet, there is a second
outlet underneath the back row seat for charging laptops, phones and other devices.
Empowering technology and purposeful features
IONIQ 6’s modular touchscreen dashboard integrates a 12-inch full-touch infotainment display
and 12-inch digital cluster that houses advanced technologies for an enhanced digital user
experience that can be customized to meet their needs.
IONIQ 6’s infotainment system provides real-time travel radius mapping based on the current
state of charge. The system’s connected car services also help search and plan the best route to

connection support is available, so two devices can be paired at the same time — one for phone
calls and one for music streaming. The premium Bose sound system’s eight speakers, including
a subwoofer, are strategically placed throughout the vehicle for a high-quality listening
experience. The navigation system comes with Bluelink® Infotainment/Map updates.
Advanced driver assistance systems ensure high levels of safety *
IONIQ 6 is equipped with the next level of Hyundai SmartSense, Advanced Driver Assistance
Systems, ensuring safety and convenience on the road 1 .
Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) helps to maintain a set distance and speed from the vehicle
ahead when driving on a highway and helps to center the vehicle in the lane while driving, even
though a curve. In case the vehicle on the side is driving very close, it assists to adjust the
vehicle's path, not to be in danger. If driving above a certain speed, holding the steering wheel,
and operating the turn signal switch automatically changes the lane in the indicated direction * .
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) helps to maintain distance from the vehicle ahead and drive at a
speed set by the driver by reflecting the learned driving style of the driver. When SCC is inactive,
the function learns the driver's driving style. When SCC is activated, the function stops learning
and drives automatically by mimicking the learned driving style * .
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) helps to avoid collisions with objects in front of the
vehicle while driving. If a preceding vehicle suddenly slows, or if a forward-collision risk is
detected, such as a stopped vehicle or a pedestrian, it provides a warning. After the warning, if
the risk of collision remains, it can assist with emergency braking. While driving, if there is a risk
of collision with a cyclist ahead, or with an oncoming vehicle while turning at an intersection, it
can help assist with emergency braking * .
Further options offer the enhanced functions of Junction Crossing, Lane-Changing Oncoming
and Lane-Changing Side along with Evasive Steering Assist. While driving through an
intersection if there is a risk of collision with oncoming vehicles from the left or right, it
automatically assists with emergency braking. When changing lanes while driving, if there is a

risk of collision with an oncoming vehicle in the next lane or a preceding vehicle in the next lane,
it automatically assists with avoidance steering. And while driving, if there is a risk of collision
with a pedestrian, partially in the vehicle's intended path, it automatically assists with avoidance
steering * .
Other semi-autonomous driving features include Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), which
adjusts vehicle speed to match the speed limit, and High Beam Assist (HBA), which can help
switch high beam lights on and off at night for approaching vehicles in the opposite oncoming
lane * .
IONIQ 6 has several driver attention-related functions * . Driver Attention Warning (DAW) analyzes
the driver's attention while driving and warns when necessary. It provides a warning when signs
of driver inattentiveness are detected, and recommends a rest if needed. During a stop, the
driver is alerted if the leading vehicle departs * .
Several functions work in tandem to help avoid collisions in a variety of driving situations. Blind-
Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) helps avoid collisions at the rear side of the vehicle when
changing lanes. When operating the turn signal to change lanes, if there is a risk of collision
detected with a rear-side vehicle, it can provide a warning. If exiting a parallel parking spot and
there is a risk of collision detected with a rear-side vehicle, it can assist with emergency braking * .
Another function, Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), displays video of the blind-spot view for a safe
lane change. When operating the turn signal switch, it displays video of the blind-spot view for
the direction indicated * .
IONIQ 6 also assures the safety of backseat passengers with Safe Exit Warning (SEW), which
provides a warning when a vehicle is approaching from the rear-side while getting out of the
vehicle. When the occupant opens the door to exit the vehicle after a stop, if an approaching
vehicle from the rear side is detected, it provides a warning * .
A variety of Parking Convenience features make parking in a variety of circumstances easier
than before. Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2) helps remotely park by Remote Parking.
or it helps remotely exit a parking spot from outside the vehicle by Remote Operation. This
feature works for parallel, perpendicular, and even diagonal parking * .
Surround View Monitor (SVM) displays video of the situation around the vehicle for safe parking.
Forward/Side/Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA) helps avoid collisions with
pedestrians and objects around the vehicle while parking or exiting. If there is a risk of collision
with pedestrians or objects while parking and exiting, it provides a warning. After the warning, if
the risk of collision increases, it automatically assists with emergency braking * .
Similarly, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) helps avoid collisions with
oncoming vehicles on the left or right side of the vehicle while reversing. If there is a risk of
collision with an oncoming vehicle on the left or right side while reversing, it provides a warning.
After the warning, if the risk of collision increases, it automatically assists with emergency
braking * .
OTA Software Update 1

Auto Trader converts electric sceptics https://whatelectric.co.uk/2022/09/07/auto-trader-converts-electric-sceptics/ https://whatelectric.co.uk/2022/09/07/auto-trader-converts-electric-sceptics/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2022 15:47:14 +0000 https://whatelectric.co.uk/?p=30 As part of Auto Trader’s ongoing commitment to drive awareness and consideration of its customers’ electric vehicles (EVs), it’s launched a new social media led campaign sharing the journey of 5 “Electric Sceptics.”

The first video launched at 11am Friday 12th August with a new video launching each Friday until World EV Day on the 9th September. The campaign will be promoted on the Auto Trader website and app, as well as via email, paid digital advertising and organic and paid social channels targeting its 2.6 million followers and subscribers.

The integrated consumer campaign will show how five confessed petrol-heads who were convinced that electric cars were “only good for non-car enthusiasts” have had their scepticism jolted – “this can really go”- out of them. The sceptics were sourced from comments on the Auto Trader Facebook page and were given the opportunity to have a driving experience with an electric vehicle alongside YouTube presenter Rory Reid. Their original scepticism around EVs centred on concerns with performance and the overall experience of driving electric.

The primary audience for the campaign is consumers who are open minded about making the switch but want to know more, with ‘EVangelists’, those who are already on their EV journey and likely to share this content with their friends and family, tapped as the secondary audience.

With one in four new car leads now for an electric vehicle, there’s clear growing consumer interest in EVs as highlighted in the latest edition of Auto Trader’s The Road to 2030 report. However, some consumers will need more education and persuasion than others to make the switch to electric and that is the focus of the “Electric Sceptics” campaign.

This is the latest in a series of significant investments made by Auto Trader which are designed to support consumers on their EV journey, by increasing awareness, dispelling myths, and by offering expert guidance and advice. Through education (including the Electric car hub) and encouragement (including the monthly EV Giveaway), these EV focused campaigns form a key part of Auto Trader’s overarching commitment to driving more engaged consumers to its retailer partners’ adverts.

The Electric Car hub, which was launched last year, combines electric car reviews, buying guides and frequently asked questions to provide a one-stop-shop for consumers considering going electric. The Electric Vehicle giveaway launched in May 2021 and has gifted a free electric vehicle to a consumer each month, generating nearly 3 million (2,927,989) entries since launch. To date, over £500,000 has been invested in prizes, which have included a MINI Electric, Jaguar I-PACE, Tesla Model 3 and a Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Rory Reid, YouTube Director at Auto Trader said: “It’s vital that we play our role in helping drive broader consumer adoption of electric cars, by highlighting the need for more financially accessible options, improved charging infrastructure, and a more transparent buying experience. But we also invest heavily in helping drive awareness amongst the millions of consumers that use our platform and tune in to our social channels.

“We often focus on the green credentials of EVs, but in this campaign we really wanted to look at the visceral experience of driving electric and challenge those sceptics that think a thrilling driving experience is limited to petrol or diesel. I think we did just that, proving that voltage is just as enjoyable as fossil, as well as a more environmentally friendly option for personal mobility.”

To watch the first in the series of Electric Sceptics videos, visit: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/cars/electric/sceptics

For retailers looking to improve their EV knowledge and confidence, Auto Trader has just announced the upcoming launch of a new Retailer Performance Masterclass which is designed to help reduce knowledge gaps and improve retailer EV confidence and capability. The module will be available later this year.
